Tahoe, like much of California, is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. North Lake Tahoe (the California side) is the land of ski resorts and family-friendly beaches. The West shore of the lake has some of the most beautiful hiking in the area, along with many of the famous tourist attractions like Vikingsholm, Fannett Island, and D.L. South Tahoe (sometimes called the Nevada side, though the state line actually runs north/south through the center of the lake), is packed with ritzy casinos. The quaint villages surrounding the lake are filled with small spas, artisan shops, and breweries, housed in adorable cabin-like structures.Īmerica’s second deepest lake spans two states, Nevada and California, so it is an easy getaway from Carson City, Reno, or the San Francisco Bay area in Northern California. The water is…well…the water is cold, REAL cold, but after a long hike on the incredible Rubicon Trail, a cool dip hits the spot! Though heavily touristy, Lake Tahoe still maintains that mountain-town charm. The air, crisp and cool, is filled with the calming scents of Spruce and Pine. It is a feast on the eyes, and the rest of your senses too. Tahoe Vista is the only Disc Golf course that charges a small fee for parking, all of the other courses are completely free.Lake Tahoe, synonymous with beauty and luxury, is without a doubt, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world! “The Alpine Caribbean”, with its crystal-clear waters in every shade of turquoise, sapphire, and emerald, is surrounded by the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains. Discs can range from $10-$20.00 and it would be a good idea to pick up at least one driver and one putter. The Village Ski Loft in Incline Village has a decent selection, along with Tahoe Sports LTD in South Lake. If you don't have any discs, you can find them at local sporting good stores. In South Lake, Zephyr Cove and Bijou State Park both have awesome, large courses. A few notable ones in North Lake are the Incline Village Disc Golf Course, and the Tahoe Vista Disc Gol Course. There are a ton of disc golf courses around Lake Tahoe. It is essentially the same as golf, except you play with little frisbees known as discs. If you're not familiar with disc golf, the concept is simple. One of my favorite things to do in the Tahoe Basin, Disc Golf is free (except for the costs of the discs), it's an opportunity to get some great exercise, and if you're playing in the evening, it's a good excuse to enjoy a beverage or two while walking in the woods. While on the hike you will walk amongst the forest, past a waterfall, and conquer switchbacks on your way to the top. The hike is about 10.7 miles round trip with 2,400 feet of elevation gain. Mount Rose - One of the tallest peaks within the Lake Tahoe basin, Mount Rose gives amazing views of Reno and Lake Tahoe. *Note: you will need to fill out a permit at the trailhead. The lake is full of little rock islands that you can swim to and bask on. You will pass by 5 different lakes on the trail to Lake Aloha, and after a long, hot hike, there is nothing better than jumping into the cool glacial waters of Lake Aloha. Lake Aloha - A large day hike, the Lake Aloha trail from Desolation wilderness spans 12.5 miles round-trip and features about 1800 feet of elevation gain. Upon climbing 3,200 feet to the summit, you'll be rewarded with unparalleled views of Tahoe. While hiking up you will have views of Tahoe and Fallen Leaf Lake. You are exposed to the sun for a good amount of the hike, and it can get very hot on the rock field. You'll travel through the lush forest for the start of the hike before transitioning onto a scenic ridgeline through a large rock field. Mount Tallac - Tallac is a 10.2-mile round trip hike located near South Lake Tahoe.
